Tufts International Development
Throughout the year TID members work with partner organizations in Latin America to further their development efforts in the region. More information about our partner organizations can be found here. We also support our members who participate in trips or internships related to sustainable development, both domestically and abroad. Information about their experiences can be found here. Finally, throughout the school year we host speaker events and discussions to foster education in the field of sustainable development and Latin America in general. Check out our Facebook page for updates on upcoming speaker events, or read about past events here.
How We Work
TID recruits students from Tufts interested in international development to work as consultants for our partner organizations. We have developed these partnerships over the last few years with rigorous research and always give TID members the opportunity to pursue new projects which they are passionate about. Each team of students is led by a consulting director, who is in constant communication with our partner and delegates and supervises work for the team. Teams meet once per week to complete assignments, and frequently engage in Skype calls with the organization to stay updated. Tasks for consulting teams range from marketing and fundraising to research and project development. There is something available for students from all disciplines!
This type of work gives students the opportunity to complete work similar to an internship without the issues of time commitment or location. All work is done remotely, and members can commit to anywhere from 1-3 hours per week, allowing them to fit the program in with a full schedule of school work. BUILD offers an incredible chance to get real work experience in the field of international development, learning about the different types of organizations working in the field and the different activities that go into successful international development work.
Outside of the consulting teams, TID also hosts several speaker events throughout the year, which are open to all! We also frequently collaborate with other student organizations to run events. We encourage students who are interested in the field of development, but do not have the time to commit to a consulting team, to follow our Facebook page for updates and attend our events!
Many of our members go on to intern with organizations in Latin America or the U.S. during the summer, and our network of partner organizations and alumni helps members to find work that fits their interests. In the past, TID members have worked with a variety of organizations in the economic, health, environment, and education sectors within Latin America during the summers. We also offer members the opportunity to go on educational trips throughout the school year, such as our Global Engagement Trips (which have gone to Mexico and Ecuador in the past), or on service trips to Honduras with our partner Action for Education.
